Badd Kitti Receives Black Music City Grant

Philly’s Funk Queen, Badd Kitti, was recently awarded a 2023 Black Music City grant. Selected from over 400 applicants, Badd Kitti is one of 30 awardees to receive this prestigious honor!
Each year, the Black Music City grant supports Philadelphian musicians of color in creating projects that honor important figures in Philadelphia’s Black music legacy. Badd Kitti will be paying tribute to producer, composer and electronic music pioneer, Dexter Wansel.

Wansel’s 1975 landmark album, “Life On Mars”, was an early hallmark of fusing synthesized music with funk and soul. His unique sound was dubbed “Cosmic Funk”. He was also among the early adaptors of what is now known as Afrofuturist philosophy.
For her project, Badd Kitti will compose an original “Cosmic Funk Suite” and produce an interactive Afrofuturist video in tribute to Wansel’s “Life On Mars”.

Dexter Wansel started his career at Philadelphia International Records in 1972 as a synthesizer programmer. He continued at PIR until 1985, composing and producing successful albums, including the Grammy Award winning,”Unmistakably Lou”, for Lou Rawls. He currently lives in the Philadelphia area and is the father of “Pops” Wansel, a highly successful R&B and Hip Hop producer.
